Monday, 13th September

10:30 am. My studio.
Very stormy weather

First day on the regular class schedule. Met Lucy, the new painting instructor, talked with her for about 40 minutes to start me thinking about what I want to be working on while I'm here.

I still have no idea.

She gave lots of suggestions (mainly that I need to think more about how I use space and texture in my paintings) but it was a bit overwhelming, really. I don't think I quite understand what she wants from me yet. Do I focus on improving the mechanics of my work, and let the subject be whatever the hell I feel like painting that week? Because that sounds like a good plan to me. But I feel like she's expecting a little more uniformity of subjects, even possibly abstracty crap that I don't really feel like doing.

Lucy says to pick a painting I really like and then write a paragraph on why I like it.

I like Waterhouse's paintings a lot because they have great fantasy touches to them, but I wouldn't want to paint in his style.
I like the color and brush flow in impressionist work, but sometimes they can get a little too painterly for my taste.
I admire painters who do very well-rendered realistic still lifes, but I might kill myself if I had to do that.

URRRG this is hard. Someone email me and tell me what to do.

  1. paint what you like and think about space and texture while you're doing it. you might pick something you really like and paint it a couple of times, varying how you use the space and varying the texture. paint a cow, don't have a cow.
